G77 and China Summit closes today in Cuba

The adoption of a final document focused on global challenges in science, technology and innovation will seal today the debates at the G77 Summit.

A hundred presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers and representatives of international organizations traveled to Havana to participate in the event, which for the first time has Cuba as host.

The current challenges of development in science, technology and innovation, and the role of this regional mechanism in the geopolitical scenario, have been the backbone of the delegations' interventions, especially the commitment to work together to achieve better equity and establish greater cooperation.

In his welcome speech on Friday, Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel noted that it is now up to the South to change the rules of the game, and emphasized that such a right assists them because the members of the G77 are the main victims of the current multidimensional crisis of the world.

He called on the nations of this bloc to create consensus and coordination strategies to fight against the imperial forms of domination prevalent in the world.

At the event, the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, intervened, who considered that the G77 must raise their voices for a planet that works for everyone with a view to building a system that defends human rights and safeguards the common interest.

In several exhibitions, the name of Cuba resonated with unanimous condemnation of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the island for more than 60 years, and for its example in terms of scientific development in the midst of this unilateral siege.

African, Latin American and Asian dignitaries reaffirmed their solidarity with Cuba and also expressed their gratitude for the support and collaboration offered by the island, despite the difficulties caused by this unilateral measure imposed by Washington.

In an atmosphere of unity, with the premise of walking together and building networks of collaboration from the Global South, the event is an extraordinary meeting before the Third South Summit, which will take place next year in Kampala, Uganda.
